AI is rewriting the rules. Write yourself into the story.

Most books about AI try to sell you either panic or Pollyanna.

The panic tells you a robot is coming for your job next Tuesday. Pollyanna tells you to lean in, embrace the future, and trust that everything will work out because innovation is always good.

Indispensable does something different. It tells the truth to students, which is this:

  • AI is already rewriting the rules for early-career work
  • Change is uneven and unpredictable
  • The people who thrive will start experimenting in public

Indispensable is a step-by-step playbook for thriving in the age of AI, written for students from 9th grade through college graduation, as well as the parents, educators, and counselors who care about their success.

You will learn:

  • Why a summer internship now matters more than a 4.0 GPA
  • How to pick a college and major when the old rankings no longer apply
  • What the "second job" is, and why it's now the first one to prepare for
  • How to tell the difference between helpful and harmful AI use
  • How to use AI as an accelerator without letting it replace the thinking that makes you valuable
  • A new framework for parents, counselors, and educators to replace the outdated advice they know is broken, but haven't had anything better to swap in

Students also get a set of practices they can start today, without harming their academic development or waiting for schools to catch up. The gap between people who are experimenting now and those who are waiting for someone to tell them how is already visible, and it’s going to be the defining opportunity of the next decade.

Indispensable is a practical guide for students, parents, and educators navigating what comes next.

Because becoming indispensable is a choice you can make today.

Advance Praise for Indispensable

"Kosch’s keen eye, big heart, and even keel create an indispensable map for navigating AI’s fierce gale."

- Hiram Chodosh, President Emeritus, Claremont McKenna College; Henry R. Kravis and George R. Roberts Chair in Leadership; Visiting Fellow, Regent’s College, Oxford University

"As a parent and educator, I was looking for a book like this. Indispensable is the practical guide every student and parent needs for navigating an AI-transformed future. Drawing on decades advising CEOs and investing in innovation, Scott Kosch reveals how young people can develop the uniquely human skills, adaptability, and AI fluency needed to thrive in a rapidly changing economy—and become truly indispensable."

- Stefano Puntoni, Professor of Marketing, The Wharton School; Co-Director, Wharton Human-AI Research

"The traditional entry-level career ladder is collapsing faster than most colleges admit. Scott Kosch’s Indispensable is one of the first books to grapple honestly with what that means for students. His message is exactly right: In the Age of AI, success will come not from memorization, but from rapid experimentation, continuous learning, and combining AI capabilities with uniquely human judgment."

- Jeffrey J. Bussgang, Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School; co-founder and general partner at Flybridge Capital Partners; author of The Experimentation Machine

"What makes us irreplaceable in an age of AI isn’t competing with machines — it’s developing the distinctly human capabilities they can’t replicate. Indispensable makes this case brilliantly and gives students a concrete path to get there. This is exactly the conversation our schools should be having."

- Gopi Kallayil, Google’s Chief Business Strategist for AI

"I tell my students that the most important shift isn't learning to use AI — it's learning to work with it. That shift is where this generation's careers will be made. Scott Kosch is raising the bar for students. Hand this book to any student you care about."

- Jeremy Utley, Instructor at Stanford Online and Harvard DCE; co-author of Ideaflow: The Only Business Metric That Matters; co-host of Beyond the Prompt

"In Indispensable, Scott Kosch invites students and families to engage with AI not as a shortcut around learning, but as a powerful tool to deepen curiosity, strengthen independence, and expand real-world impact. A useful guide for turning AI anxiety into human agency."

- Brice Challamel, Head of AI Strategy and Adoption, OpenAI; Executive Fellow, Harvard Business School AI Institute

"This wonderful book is a glossary, blueprint, field guide, and manual for today's AI agenda. It will help everyone from the novice to the experienced user understand and use AI more effectively."

- Dave Ulrich, Rensis Likert Professor Emeritus of Business, University of Michigan; Partner, The RBL Group; author of 25 books

"I was one of the first people Scott asked to read Indispensable in draft. I knew immediately it would be an amazing resource, not only for college and high school students, but also for my team of career coaches—so much so that after the final read, I pre-ordered 15 copies for my team."

- Ursula Diamond, PhD, Assistant Vice President of Student Opportunities, Career Services at the Soll Center for Student Opportunity, Claremont McKenna College

"Indispensable is an AI resource that cuts through the noise -- positive and approachable without being naive. Scott Kosch gives students a structured, practical way to prepare for their future without losing sight of their well-being and the human relationships that drive real success. This is the resource high school counselors need."

- Heidi Sauer, Director of Counseling, Eanes School District; former Lead Guidance Counselor, Westlake High School, Austin, Texas

Meet Scott Kosch

Scott Kosch sits at an unusual intersection of investing, AI, and education.

He co-founded NextAccess, an AI business transformation consultancy, and is Managing Partner at Kosch Capital, where he has invested in over a hundred early stage technology companies.

With over 25 years of professional experience, he's seen what makes people indispensable inside high-performing companies, and now he's watching AI rewrite the rules in real time. He wrote Indispensable for students because they’re the ones with the most at stake and the least guidance.

Scott also co-authors the Capital Intelligence newsletter on LinkedIn, advising private equity and venture capital partners and their portfolio CEOs on AI value creation. He serves as Board Chair of the Gould Center for Humanistic Studies, where he champions the case that great humanists make great AI-era professionals, and Board Member of the Randall Lewis Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Claremont McKenna College.

Scott holds an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Economics and Psychology from Claremont McKenna College. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and has two kids in college.
